Lower back pain

A burden on patients, families and communities

Chronic lower back pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal conditions causing disability and absence from work worldwide. This affects the patient, their family and can place a financial burden on the wider community.

Studies suggest that approximately 80% of individuals will experience it at least once in their lifetime. This condition can occur at any age, although it becomes more common as people get older. The severity and duration can vary widely, ranging from mild discomfort that resolves within a few days to chronic pain that persists for months or even years.

Lower back pain causes and risk factors

There are various factors that contribute to the development of lower back pain. These can include poor posture, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, muscle strain or injury, herniated discs, spinal abnormalities (e.g. scoliosis), and certain medical conditions such as arthritis or osteoporosis. Additionally, psychological factors like stress and depression can also contribute to the onset or exacerbation of severe lower back pain. There can be nerve root involvement or not.
In women, it often presents as a result of pelvis imbalances due to pregnancy; but it can be also attributed to instability of the lumbar spine, core muscles weakness, herniated disks, degenerative or autoimmune diseases.

Occupational factors also play a significant role in the prevalence of lower back pain. Jobs that involve heavy lifting, repetitive motions, or prolonged sitting without proper ergonomics are more likely to contribute to back pain issues. Furthermore, lack of exercise, inadequate core strength, and improper body mechanics can increase the risk of developing lower back pain.

Impact on quality of life

Lower back pain can significantly impact an individual's quality of life, limiting their ability to perform daily activities and affecting their overall well-being. It can cause physical discomfort, sleep disturbances, and emotional distress. Additionally, the economic burden associated with lower back pain is substantial, including healthcare costs, lost work productivity, and disability claims.

Fortunately, many cases of lower back pain can be effectively managed through conservative treatments such as rest, exercise, and chiropractic care. In more severe or chronic cases, additional interventions like prescription medications, or surgery may be necessary.

Prevention strategies can also play a vital role in reducing the incidence of lower back pain. Maintaining a healthy weight, practicing good posture, engaging in regular exercise, using proper lifting techniques, and implementing ergonomic adjustments in the workplace can all contribute to preventing or minimizing lower back pain.

In addition to all this, the patient may experience anxiety, stress or depression, locking him/her into a vicious cycle of inactivity which naturally leads to more pain and wrong nutritional choices which - in turn - leads to more inactivity. Chiropractic care is an effective, natural, safe way to manage chronic lower back pain without the use of medication. Results are scientifically proven
