Happiness and confidence
The science behind physical exercise
Regular exercise has long been hailed as a powerful tool for physical well-being, but its benefits extend far beyond the realm of physical fitness.
When we engage in physical activity, our brains undergo a remarkable transformation, releasing a cocktail of chemicals that can uplift our mood, enhance our confidence, reduce anxiety, stress and bring more happiness. In this blog post, I would like to explore the world of brain chemistry and analyse how exercise triggers the release of endorphins, dopamine, adrenaline, and endocannabinoids, all of which contribute to our overall sense of happiness, capability, and reduced physical pain.
The Impact of Endorphins
Endorphins, often referred to as the body’s natural painkillers, are neuropeptides produced by the central nervous system. These remarkable chemicals are responsible for the “runner’s high” and play a crucial role in regulating pain perception, enhancing mood, reducing stress, in other words, create more happiness. When we exercise, endorphin levels rise, creating a euphoric feeling and providing relief from physical discomfort. Additionally, endorphins act as natural mood elevators, combating symptoms of depression and anxiety.
One of the primary functions of endorphins is to alleviate pain. When the body experiences physical discomfort or stress, endorphins are released in response. These endogenous opioids bind to specialized receptors in the brain and spinal cord, effectively blocking pain signals from reaching the brain. By doing so, endorphins help reduce the perception of pain, providing a natural analgesic effect.
Beyond pain modulation, endorphins also contribute to our emotional well-being. When endorphin levels increase, they generate feelings of pleasure and euphoria. This phenomenon is commonly experienced during intense physical activities like exercise or engaging in enjoyable experiences. The release of endorphins during these activities not only reduces pain but also induces a sense of joy, happiness and contentment.
In addition to their pain-relieving and mood-enhancing effects, endorphins also play a role in regulating stress and anxiety. When we are under stress, endorphin production increases, acting as a natural stress response mechanism. These chemicals help to mitigate the impact of stress on our bodies and minds, promoting a sense of calmness and resilience. By reducing anxiety levels, endorphins contribute to an overall sense of well-being and emotional stability.
Furthermore, endorphins can influence other physiological processes. They have been shown to modulate the immune system, enhancing immune response and promoting overall immune function. Endorphins also contribute to the regulation of appetite and can affect food cravings. Take a look here if you want to know more about this point.
It is worth noting that endorphins are not solely released through physical activity. Various other factors can trigger their release, such as laughter, listening to music, and engaging in pleasurable social interactions. These activities can also promote the release of endorphins, leading to a positive emotional state.
Dopamine
Dopamine, known as the “feel-good” neurotransmitter, is closely associated with motivation, reward, and pleasure. When we engage in exercise, dopamine is released, contributing to a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. This surge of dopamine reinforces the brain’s reward pathway, making us more likely to repeat the behavior that elicited the positive experience. Consequently, regular exercise can boost our overall sense of happiness and motivation, promoting feelings of confidence and capability.
Adrenaline
Adrenaline, also known as epinephrine, is a hormone and neurotransmitter that plays a vital role in our body’s stress response. During exercise, adrenaline is released in response to the increased demand for energy and oxygen. This surge of adrenaline heightens our senses, increases heart rate, and provides an exhilarating rush. As a result, we experience a heightened state of alertness, increased focus, and enhanced cognitive function. The thrill of adrenaline during exercise not only makes physical activity more enjoyable but also contributes to a sense of confidence and empowerment.
Endocannabinoids
Endocannabinoids, such as anandamide, are naturally occurring chemicals that resemble the compounds found in cannabis. They are involved in various physiological processes, including mood regulation, pain perception, and appetite control. Exercise has been shown to increase the production and release of endocannabinoids, leading to a sense of calmness, happiness, reduced anxiety, and a decrease in physical pain. These chemicals can also enhance our overall well-being by stimulating neurogenesis, the growth of new brain cells.
Engaging in regular exercise not only offers numerous physical benefits but also has a profound impact on our mental and emotional well-being. By increasing the levels of endorphins, dopamine, adrenaline, and endocannabinoids, exercise creates a cascade of positive effects in our brain chemistry. The release of these chemicals contributes to feelings of happiness, confidence, capability, reduced anxiety and stress, and even less physical pain. Incorporating exercise into our daily routines can be an effective strategy for improving our overall quality of life.
So, the next time you lace up your running shoes, hit the gym, or embark on a nature hike, remember that the benefits extend far beyond the physical realm. Embrace the power of exercise as a tool to unleash happiness, boost confidence, alleviate anxiety and stress, and pave the way for a more fulfilling and balanced life.

Dr Edo provides a whole body approach to resolving chiropractic issues. His care plan to help solve your unique issues is fantastic, short and simple adjustments rather than long sessions of big adjustments has worked brilliantly for me. Communications are easy and booking ahead is brilliant for me and my schedule.
I canโt recommend Alive highly enough!

The reception is also very welcoming. I very much recommend this place!

Dr Edo is professional, knowledge, and believes firmly in his work which he is clearly passionate about. I feel he has an empowering vision, cares deeply, and has a refreshing balance of western and eastern understanding. Because of this, Dr Edo has a deeper, holistic approach by taking into account all aspects of one's lifestyle (diet, exercise, mental/emotional state) in sessions. For someone like myself who values a holistic perspective on health, Dr Edo's approach is invaluable and helped me relax and feel at great ease. Sam in reception is lovely and you instantly feel welcomed when coming in for a session also. Thank you to you both. Highly recommend!

Thank you!

I will happily recommend Alive Chiropractic to my friends.

Ed takes a very holistic approach, encouraging me to lose weight and work on different rehab exercises to reinforce the manipulations and adjustments he made.
Here I am some three months on, I weigh a lot less, I have incredible flexibility in my lower back and can now touch my toes and, best of all. I have full flexibility of my neck.
Eds holistic approach really works, he is very approachable and easy to chat about things with.
One caveat, Ed knows when you haven't done your exercises so don't cheat. ๐
I cannot thank him enough for the massive improvements in my health and his encouraging me to make little changes for a healthier long term lifestyle.
